The Search box is at the top-left (or top-right) corner of all pages.

Use it to find topics of your choice, wherever they occur in the Virtual Museum. You may search for names, places, dates - anything!

In addition to single words, this search now recognises phrases (in quotes), which can refine the matches found. Searching "6 High Street" in quotes finds only entries mentioning that address, whilst 6 High Street without quotes finds around 200 entries!

Entering this and that into the search form will return results containing both "this" and "that".

Entering this not that into the search form will return results containing "this" and not "that".

Entering this or that into the search form will return results containing either "this" or "that".

Entering "this and that" (with quotes) into the search form will return results containing the exact phrase "this and that".

Please note that many family names have a variety of spellings, such as Wodham and Woodham, Pearse and Pearce, Clisdel, Clisdale and Clidsdall.

Consider alternative spellings for everything! If you are looking for trades, note that you may find "plumber" often spelt "plummer", or "maltster" spelt "malster" in 18th century documents.

The search is very powerful, but because the Virtual Museum is so large, it can take a few seconds to display results.

Penny Post wrote 20 March 2026): "The well attended Annual Town Meeting was also notable for the announcement by the Mayor Helen Simpson that she and her Deputy Claire Winser would be standing down from HTC in May. Helen has been the Mayor since May 2018, five prime ministers ago. Since then we’ve left the EU, endured a pandemic, grappled with a climate emergency, had a jubilee, the death of the Queen and a coronation and experienced some savage inflationary pressures and economic problems. Her period in office also almost exactly matches the progress of Hungerford’s neighbourhood development plan which was started in the month she took up the chain and was finally adopted late last year. All of these have impacted the town in various ways and the town has often looked to HTC for guidance and support. To these needs the Town Council has, under Helen’s leadership, responded admirably. A high standard of achievement and engagement has been set for her successor, who will be confirmed at the annual Town Council meeting in May.

 

Mayors of Hungerford

Hungerford's mayor Martin Crane (at RIGHT in the group photograph) managed to gather 11 former Hungerford mayors for photographs on Hungerford's new canal footbridge (21st April 2012). The bridge was to be officially opened during the Queen's diamond jubilee celebrations and is likely to bear a similar name to The Diamond Jubilee Bridge.
