The dozen or so local carriers fulfilled a vital role in the community, providing a link with adjacent towns and villages in the days before any 'public' transport. William Harry Giles provided carriage to Newbury three days a week from 1903. He is photographed here with his sons Harry (standing) and Percy (in the driving seat), and their Daimler coach.

Caveat:
The history of ownership and occupation of the properties in this part of Charnham Street is very speculative. Records are sketchy, and confusing. This page is the current "best attempt" to clarify the history of these properties, but much further work still needs to be done. It is possible that the historic boundaries do not match the modern ones.

Stradling's, Stradling & Plenty Ltd, c1912-c1934:
1912: Stradling's Ltd. James Stradling started his cycle business in Newbury in 1877, and opened a cycle shop at 14 Charnham Street c1900. Plenty's engineering firm was first established in Newbury in 1800, and Stradling's cycle business in 1877. When they came together, it was an ideal joint venture. Around 1911-12, he moved to larger premises here at 21 Charnham Street. The shop front is clearly shown on the photograph of the Bear Corner taken on the occasion of the visit by King George V on 21 Oct 1912 (see Photo Gallery).
1916 Cosburn's Dir: Stradling and Plenty Ltd, motor engineers, Charnham Street (E Stevens, manager). (Roger Day kindly added: When Edmund Charles Stevens joined the RNAS on 10 Dec 1917 his civilian occupation was given as motor mechanic.)
c1918: Stradling's Ltd: Photo of the Bear Corner shows Stradling's Ltd cycler shop, with a Stradling's garage sign on the east wall. Sale agents for Wolseley, sunbeam, humber, rover, standard, citroen, BSA and Daimler cars.
c1920: Stradling & Plenty Ltd: Another photograph (see Photo Gallery) showing the premises of Stradling & Plenty was taken with of WH Giles, Hungerford carrier, with his sons Harry and Percy, and their Daimler coach, outside the premises. It is possible that Stradling & Plenty had built the coach onto an ex-military Daimler chassis, and that the photograph is being taken on "hand-over" day.
1934 Stradling & Plenty opened a garage on land to the west of The Bear hotel. See 40 Charnham Street.
