The Search box is at the top-left (or top-right) corner of all pages.

Use it to find topics of your choice, wherever they occur in the Virtual Museum. You may search for names, places, dates - anything!

In addition to single words, this search now recognises phrases (in quotes), which can refine the matches found. Searching "6 High Street" in quotes finds only entries mentioning that address, whilst 6 High Street without quotes finds around 200 entries!

Entering this and that into the search form will return results containing both "this" and "that".

Entering this not that into the search form will return results containing "this" and not "that".

Entering this or that into the search form will return results containing either "this" or "that".

Entering "this and that" (with quotes) into the search form will return results containing the exact phrase "this and that".

Please note that many family names have a variety of spellings, such as Wodham and Woodham, Pearse and Pearce, Clisdel, Clisdale and Clidsdall.

Consider alternative spellings for everything! If you are looking for trades, note that you may find "plumber" often spelt "plummer", or "maltster" spelt "malster" in 18th century documents.

The search is very powerful, but because the Virtual Museum is so large, it can take a few seconds to display results.

Trade and Industry in 20th Century Hungerford and beyond

In the mid 1980s, employment was reduced by the closure of the Chilton factory and others.

A new group was formed, the Trade, Industry and Employment Committee, under the chairmanship of Jack Williams, with the express aim of improving employment in the town.

As a result, the Charnham Lane trading estate was developed.

A large number of invoice and letter headings have been made available on the Virtual Museum within the articles on specific businesses or origanisations.

However, there are several more (from the John Newton slides) that are grouped here as they do not yet have inficidual articles on them.

- 1910: Parish Magazine adverts for various businesses.

- 24 December 1923: A reference heading for Conrad Lane, Haulage Contractor, Hungerford.

- 30 June 1960: Invoice heading for "J.T. Gibbs & Co. Ltd., Bath Road, Builders, Contractors and Decorators". 

- Undated: Letter heading for "J. Taylor (Distributor) Ltd., Blue Star Yard, Bath Road, Wholesale Grocers".

- 8 October 1987: Invoice heading for "Biwater Shellabear, Smitham Bridge Road".

13 December 1990: Invoice for "Options, Picture Framers, Unit 1, Charnham Lane, Print Sellers, Glass & Mirror Merchants".

One of the key firms on the Charnham Lane site was Kerridge Commercial Systems (KCS) Ltd. Martin Crane, editor of Chain Mail wrote an article on KCS Ltd in May 2023.
