Local Information:

Sidney Channon was the son of Robert and Emma Channon, of Sunningdale, Berkshire, and the husband of Florence Mary Channon, of 10 Church Street, Hungerford. He was born in Ottery St Mary, Devon and enlisted at Newbury. He joined the 10th Battalion which one of Kitcheners Service Battalions. He died on Saturday 16th June 1917, age 38.

[It appears he had previous army service with the Army Service Corps. (Army number 182957)]

On the night of the 13th the battalion moved up to trenches at Monchy and relieved the 1st Gordon Highlanders. Trenches were heavily shelled.

14.6.1917
75th Brigade attacked and took their objective.

15.6.1917
At 2.15am the enemy made a strong counter attack against the position taken by the Brigade the previous day, but were repulsed with considerable loss. The Brigade held onto the positions with the exception of one advanced post, against which the enemy made a very strong attack. There was considerable shelling throughout the day.

16.6.1917
There was heavy shelling on Shrapnel Trench, where the Battalion HQ was situated.
