	Private 15772 Joseph Sidney Hunt 2nd Battalion (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Royal Berkshire Regiment

Local Information:

Private Hunt was born in Compton the son of Alfred and Phoebe Ann Hunt, of Park Street, Hungerford. He was the husband of Alice Hunt of 11 Priory Place, Hungerford.

He enlisted at Newbury and went to France on the 24th March 1915 where he joined the 2nd Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on Sunday the 9th May 1915, age 25. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial to the missing, Comines-Warneton, Hainaut, Belgium. [He is shown on 'Soldiers Died' as having a middle name of Stanley.]

The Battalion War diary reads:

8.5.1915:
The Battalion moved from billets in Bac St Maur at 11.00pm and took up its positions in the assembly trenches.

9.5.1915:
5.00am – Bombardment of German trenches commenced. Berks occupied the two assembly trenches in the rear of Breastwork being held by the Rifle Brigade. When the Rifle Brigade went over the top the Berks moved up the line vacated by them. When the Berks arrived they found that many of he Rifle brigade were still in the occupation and that the bodies of their comrades were strewn in front of the front line trench in No Mans Land.
