10th Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry

Local Information:

Private Rayment was born in Egham, Surrey and enlisted in Hungerford. We have no information about his time in Hungerford but assume he was working in the town.

At some point he served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment (army number 20114). He joined the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and died on Friday 28th December 1917, age 26.

He is buried in Ruyaulcourt Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

The 10th Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry was a pioneer battalion and as such used for many labouring tasks. This was in theory designed to take the pressure of the front line battalions in providing manpower. (It did not work so well in practice as most infantrymen when out of the line and 'resting' found themselves employed on similar tasks as the pioneer battalions). Although the pioneer battalions were not designated as front line battalions they work in and close to the front line that they were always in range on the enemy guns.

The War Diary reads:

25.11.1917 – Detrained Achiet Le Grand, embossed for Beaumetz.

28.12.1917 – Same detail as for the 26th, plus 2 platoons of 'C' Company digging a trench near Hermies. Casualties 1 officer wounded 8 other ranks killed, 3 other ranks wounded.
