Private 9068 Arthur Richard Smith
2nd Batt'n, Royal Berkshire Regiment

Until recently, little was known about Private Smith, who is listed on the town hall memorial board as being killed in 1915. His name does not appear on the memorial board in St Lawrence's Church which would indicate he was from outside the parish.

However, Andrew Radgick kindly contacted the Virtual Museum saying:

"I believe he may be Arthur Richard Smith, service no 9068, 2nd Battn, Royal Berkshire Regiment, killed 7th April 1915.

On the ancestry.co.uk website, he is recorded as a native of Hungerford, and in the 1911  census, he is in India, serving with the Royal Berkshires, age 22,  birthplace Hungerford."
