From leaving school and up to the time of his enlistment, Pte Liddiard had worked for the Wessex Electricity Board as a Linesman.

Frederick Harold Liddiard was among those British Forces serving in Northern Ireland at the early stages of the war in order to stop the ports of Eire falling into German hands.  Whilst with the Royal Berkshire Regiment he was involved in an accident whilst riding a motor-cycle on Dispatch Rider duties, receiving serious head injuries.  Initially, he was taken to a Belfast hospital for treatment, before being moved to a military hospital where his condition worsened and he died of his injuries on 7 April 1941.

Wally Dennis, a Hungerford resident, remembers he was in Ireland at the time and was told that a friend of his from Hungerford had been injured in an accident.   By the time Wally got to the hospital Fred had been moved.

His funeral took place in Northern Ireland and he was buried in Coleraine Cemetery.
