Summary: "The Lamb", 5 Charnham Street.  1823 - present

We would welcome more information on this topic

The origins of the Lamb Inn are unclear at present.

The earliest reference is in the 1823 Pigot Directory, when Richard Palmer was landlord.

By the 1844 edition, Thomas Toey (Tow or Toe) was innkeeper, and his name persist in directories and census returns until the 1861 census.
1851 (Census) Thomas Toe (52), Innkeeper; Jane Toe, wife; sister; William Lovelock (25), Servant; William Burley (28) Lodger; Jane Common (45); Lodger.
1861 (Census) Thomas Toe, Innkeeper.

The 1863 Dutton & Allen Directory has Simon Hoddinot as innkeeper, although in the following year, the Billing Directory has Thomas William Toe.

The 1869 Kelly is the first to record the new landlord, Edmund Hill.
1871 (Census) Edmund Hill.
1877 (Kelly Dir) Mrs Mary Hill.

Mrs Ann Hill is shown as publican in the 1891 and 1895 Kelly.

Celia Turner adds: "The Lamb Inn in Charnham Street was being run in 1901 by Emma and George's son and daughter-in-law Arthur and Emily Jessie Clifford, (which your records show they ran until 1911). Arthur died in 1917 but Emily ran the Inn from 1920 until her death in 1921."

Landlords in the 20th century included:
1900 (Cosburn) - 1911  (Kelly) Arthur Clifford
1920 (Kelly) Mrs Emily Jessie Clifford
1928 (Kelly)  Sidney Filbee
1935 (Kelly) - 1939 (Blackett) Fred Percy Kunkler

The Lamb was renamed "Five" bar and grill, which closed in autumn 2009.

On 9th June 2010 Bar Five reopened as The Lamb, with Simon Liquorice, the proprietor, offering a pub with a difference - with a good  variety of old fashioned reasonably priced food, including proper English breakfasts from 6.30 - 11.30am or hot and cold sandwiches from 6.30am - 6.30pm and fish & chips, chicken, pies etc from  lunchtimes. Simon is also running The Langley Hall Inn along the same  lines and with this now established, has brought the idea to Hungerford.
