Summary: 18-19 Bridge Street; c1830 - c1956

The earliest record is in 1830 Pigot Directory, when Richard North was landlord. At this time, Bridge Street was still called "High Street".

John Beard the local brewer bought the premises in 1936, and was recorded (aged 50 years) in the 1841 census, and later in the 1844 Slater Directory, the 1844 Snare Directory, the 1847 Kelly and Snare, the 1850 Slater Directory - all referring to "innkeeper" or "tavern and public house".

In the 1851 census, Frederick Pearce (aged 32 years) is landlord, and he is also in the 1854 Billing Directory.

The 1861 census has Abel Blake (48 years) as Publican - still there in the 1863 Dutton & Allen Directory.

By the following year, 1864, however, Frederick Pearce was "victualler".

In the 1871 census, George Clifford was "innkeeper", and again in the 1877 and 1891 Kelly. The 1871 Census also includes George's wife Emma, her brother Walter Cox, and George and Emma's three children - Sarah Ann and Mary Catherine (both born in Kensington, Middlesex) and son Arthur Clifford born in Hungerford in 1870.  Walter was employed as a carpenter. (See Cox family).
