Description of property:

From Listed Building records: Terraced house. Early C18 altered in early C19. Old tile roof, chimney to right. Bright grey headers red stretchers, dressings and vertical bands flanking the windows, dentil eaves. 2 storeys and attic. 2 gabled dormers. Two 3 light casement windows with iron framed leaded lights under cambered heads to first floor. One similar casement to left of ground floor, central door with modern shop front extending over single storey extension to right.

c1905: Stradling & Plenty. James Stradling started his cycle business in Newbury in 1877, and opened a cycle shop at 14 Charnham Street c1900. Shortly after, he moved to larger premises here at 21 Charnham Street.

WH Giles, Hungerford carrier, outside Stradling & Plenty, c1918.
The dozen or so local carriers fulfilled a vital role in the community, providing a link with adjacent towns and villages in the days before any 'public' transport. William Harry Giles provided carriage to Newbury three days a week from 1903. He is photographed here with his sons Harry (standing) and Percy (in the driving seat), and their Daimler coach.
