Hungerford has been well known as a centre for trading antiques for many decades. It lies on the well-worn tourist route between London, Bath and Oxford, and there are many excellent shops specialising in anything from 15th to 17th century oak furniture, to silver items of all periods.

In 1988, as part of the local celebrations to commemorate the Tercentenary of the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and the visit of Prince William of Orange to The Bear Inn, the first of a series of guides about the various Antique Shops in Hungerford was produced.
