Below is the cover page of "Samuel West's Arithmetic Book, Feb the 7th 1794 ". It is full of beautifully tidy examples of long division, multiplication, and mathematical problem solving. This was probably a standard book used by children studying at the Free Grammar School in The Croft.

We are unsure yet just who this Samuel West was, but Parish records show:
- 22.1.1727 Samuel West married Ann Bird
- 8.12.1728 Samuel West baptised
- 23.12.1728 Samuel West buried
